Growing up parents have always said “be yourself” and “follow your own path” and their all time favorite “if your friends jump off a cliff would you jump too?” Some took their parent’s advice, others didn’t. Some didn’t have a choice. Let’s say you have an accent of some sort and you have a job, that only puts food on the table. The only way to move up a position and have a better paycheck is neutralizing your God given accent and your name would be changed as well. Call centers in India are giving themselves off as local, for the benefit of the company. Call center workers go and get trained at a school to neutralize their accent, ridding them of their mother tongue, and astonishly some of these people are insecure about their accents. The very unique and wonderful thing about them and they are unsure about applying it in their careers. There is a reason as to why they are afraid to speak; some customers are racist broots. They insult the call center works on the other end of the phone. Not even knowing what they are going through by just speaking English.
Call center workers not only go through a rigorous speech training, they also have a name change to fit their “authentic” American or British accents. They are to usethese names when they addressing customers. These names are also used outside of work. Friends, co-workers, and even family members become accustom to this name. Is this right? Call center companies are stripping these people of their cultures, which should always be a huge part of everyone's life, especially Indian people whose culture is so vast and influential. This rejection of culture can have horrible consequences. Language death. This means precisely how it sounds, the language just becomes extincted. Basically, call centers are murdering language!

You are so right girl! I totally agree with you. People should be able to express themselves, no matter what their cultural background is. We should all respect each other!
ReplyDeleteYeah! Language death is so un-cool! @carlsantos
ReplyDeleteYo, you guys need to realize these people have to choice. They need to work, they need to survive. Don't they!? You guys are on the outside looking in. It's really hard. In America it's a lot different. I guess you guys are way too privileged to even understand @samcollins

ReplyDeleteI don't have to "know" you two, not personally anyway. The fact that you speak perfect English, and living in America makes you privileged. @samcollins
